I want to run a business from home do I need permission to set up an office in my house?
If you are a homeowner intending to run a business from home and wish to use an existing room as an office this will not normally require permission. Permission will be required if structural changes are involved (e.g. converting a garage, creating a separate entrance or adding an extension). You should also take into consideration the impact upon your neighbourhood from such things as:
- Whether you will need to provide access and parking for visiting clients or deliveries.
- Whether your occupation might prove a nuisance to neighbours from noise, pollution or the storage of materials.
- Whether you would need permission for advertising boards at the premises
- If your business might constitute a Change of Use for the premises and so forth.
