Development Control Frequently Asked Questions

The Council, as part of our commitment to sustainability, is generally supportive of alternative energy sources.

In the case of private homes, the addition of solar panels will generally be considered as permitted development. However, it may be advisable to check with the Development Control department before entering into an installation contract. As a guide the panels should lie flat upon the slope of the roof and not project significantly above the roof-line. More details can be found on the "Common Projects" page at the Planning Portal.

If your property is divided into flats, a listed building, located in a conservation area or subject to an Article 4 directive you will need to obtain permission before installing solar panels.

In addition, you will need to consider if your roof is sufficiently strong to bear the weight of the panels and also if additional works will be necessary for the installation of circulating equipment. In this regard you should also contact Building Control.
