If you have applied for planning permission and you feel that the decision of the Local Planning Authority does not conform to the local plan or other policies you may appeal against the decision. An appeal is a formal process and will be heard by the Planning Inspectorate who will appoint an inspector to consider the case. If you raise an appeal you may wish to have legal representation and you should certainly consult with the local Planning Appeals officer before embarking on the process.
You may also appeal if you believe that the Local Authority has taken too long to consider your application. The normal timescales for decisions are 8 weeks for householder and small commercial proposals and 13 weeks for major works (large scale housing or commercial developments). In the case of very large commercial developments or cases with considerable public impact the determination period may be formally increased.
