Council Tax Scam Warning!

There have been reports in the news about people in other areas being approached by bogus Council Tax officials, asking for their bank details.

People are being told that they are due a refund of Council Tax and are then asked for their bank details to allow them to receive the refund.

The Royal Borough would like to make people aware that it does not telephone or e-mail people for their bank details in order to make refunds.

If you are due a refund, you will be told in writing. Refunds are generally paid by cheque and they are only paid to a bank account if payments had been made by Direct Debit, in which case the Council has the information it needs anyway.

If you are contacted by someone claiming to be from the Council, and you are unsure, please ask them for their name and extension, and then call the Council on 01628 683800 to speak to them.

Although no resident of the borough has reported that they have been approached in this way, we would ask Council Tax payers to be vigilant and make sure their bank details are kept safe.

Appealing Against Your Council Tax Band

A recent media campaign has highlighted the opportunity Council Tax payers may have, in challenging the Council Tax band of their property. Please be advised that all queries regarding your Council Tax Band, including requests for banding reductions, must be directed to the Valuation Office.

You still need to pay your Council Tax while you are appealing against your band. If your Council Tax band is reduced any credits will be refunded to you.
