Business Rates: Frequently Asked Questions

New legislation has recently been introduced by the Government which changes the way that empty rate relief is administered from 1st April 2008.

From 1 April 2008 properties which are empty and unoccupied will receive either a three month void period (for offices, shops, leisure and motor trade properties) or a six month void period (industrial properties). This exempt period will be followed by a 100 per cent rate liability so no reduction in rates will be applicable at the end of the exempt period.
