We aim to provide a range of short break services to meet the different ages, needs and interests of children, young people and their families across the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead. A directory of all our current short breaks is attached at the end of the page.
The range of short breaks we offer includes:
One to one short breaks offer children and young people quality time with a qualified carer to participate in activities of their own choice. A family's entitlement for 1:1 provision will be based on the assessment of need completed by a Keyworker from the LDD Service. One to one short breaks range from supporting children and young people with LDD to access local mainstream services (e.g. scouts, brownies, youth groups, dance classes) through to providing specialist services (e.g. specialist childminders).
Cost: Families pay for all activity costs if required.
Contact: Your Keyworker on 01628 685878 or email LDDService@rbwm.gov.uk
Direct Payments are financial payments that give families choice and control over arranging the help and support to meet their assessed needs. The Keyworker will discuss the option of Direct Payments for one to one support with the family when they carry out their assessment. For further information on Direct Payments, please contact your Keyworker on 01628 685878 or see the document at the end of the page.
This scheme provides families with a bank of specialist childminders who are trained to work with children and young people aged 0-18 with additional needs. This scheme is used for short breaks after school, weekends and overnight but is not used for day to day childcare for parents and carers to go out to work. Other overnight short breaks are provided through a variety of settings. Childminder Plus is also available during the holiday periods.
Cost: No cost to families unless additional activities are being provided

Every other week the Saturday Club takes place at the Jubilee Suite on the Dedworth Green First School site in Windsor from 9.30-12.30. This is an activity club for children with disabilities of any age up to 18, their siblings and parents/carers. It provides children with an opportunity to socialise and participate in fun activities within a safe environment such as trampolining and outdoor play, gardening, arts and crafts, cooking and a sensory room. There are also 3 or 4 off site visits to Camp Mohawk a year. The older children - "the Masters"- decide their own programme of activities and have a monthly visit to a local mainstream youth centre. There is also now a focus on under 5s with the introduction of singing and story times for under 5's at specific sessions. The Saturday Club sessions are facilitated by a group of paid staff and volunteers. At least one parent/carer must stay with and remain responsible for their children at all times during the session. To attend a session, a referral needs to be made through the LDD Service. Please contact the LDD Service on 01628 685878 or email LDDService@rbwm.gov.uk.
Buddy Group Youth Club offers young disabled people (aged 12-17) the opportunity to access a range of age appropriate activities, make new friends, develop their independence and learn new skills. The Youth Club is based at Pinkney's Green Community Centre in Maidenhead and is run by our Targeted Support Co-ordinator and support workers. The Youth Club provides opportunities for young people to practise skills such as cooking, sports (including football, pool, table tennis), arts and crafts, computing and socialising. There is also a range of off site trips e.g. going to the cinema, going out for meals, shopping trips, swimming and canoeing. The young attendees of the Buddy Group Youth Club also have the chance to become members of RBWM's LDD Youth Council. This forum gives young people with learning difficulties and disabilities the chance to have their say in matters relating to youth and teen provision in the borough and feed back their thoughts and views to the main RBWM Youth Council and decision makers in the Council. Buddy Group Youth Club runs every Monday during term time from 5.00-6.45pm. For further information, see the upcoming events page or contact the Targeted Support Co-ordinator on 01628 685878 or email LDDService@rbwm.gov.uk.
In response to parental feedback in January 2013 a social group was set up specifically for young people aged 10-18 with physical disabilities who are known the LDD Service to give them an opportunity to socialise with like-minded peers. The Group involves a variety of trips and social activities in and around the local area. This mirrors the Buddy Group model we originally set up in 2010 and has resulted in setting up Buddy Group Youth Club at Pinkney's Green.
The Group takes place on the first Saturday of the month and involves activities such as bowling, going to the cinema, meals out, youth club visits, sports and shopping trips. The young attendees are supported by trained workers from the LDD Bankstaff who work with them to promote and encourage their independence and social skills. Through activities such as shopping and meals out the young people also have the chance to practice and develop life skills such as handling money and using public transport. For further information about this group, please contact our Keyworker on 01628 685878 or email LDDService@rbwm.gov.uk.
