'Secured by Design' is a police initiative intended to encourage the building industry to adopt crime prevention measures in development design. The aim of the scheme is to assist in reduceing the opportunity for crime and the fear of crime by creating a safer and more secure environment.
'Secured by Design' is intended to achieve a better quality of life by addressing crime prevention at the earliest opportunity in the design, layout and construction of homes and commercial premises. 'Secured by Design' supports one of the Governments key objectives of creating secure, quality places where people wish to live and work.
'Secured by Design' is supported and managed by the Association of Chief Police Officers and has the backing of the Home Office. It has been drawn up in consultation with the Department of the Environment, Transport and the Regions (now incorporated in the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister) as well as trade, industry and standards bodies. The Suzy Lamplugh Trust, the Association of British Insurers and a host of regulatory bodies also endorse the scheme.
