Building Control: Frequently Asked Questions

The Building Control service is required to cover all its costs from Charge income (none of the burden can fall on the council taxpayer). Our level of charges must therefore be set accordingly.

Our charges could only be lowered by making corresponding reductions in our service, which would mean waiting longer for plans to be approved and for site inspections to be made. Leading to increased costs, and delays in construction.

Feedback from customers indicates that they would prefer that our service standards are maintained, but we promise that our charges will be no higher than necessary to achieve this.

Charges for Building Notices are the same as Full Plans applications. This is because although no plan check is made, additional reliance is placed on the inspection stage of the process. This means that the number of visits increases or they take longer to discuss issues.
