Kickback Children in Care Council

children readingChildren and young people who are in the care of the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead have regular opportunities to have their say about how we can improve things for children and young people in this area.

Kickback is the name of our "Children in Care Council" and different Kickback activities take place throughout the year. Children in care under 11 have had the opportunity to visit the theatre, take part in nature activities at Braywick Nature Reserve and get involved with an Ofsted event at Legoland in Windsor. Our young people in care aged 11 and over have been bowling, to the London Eye and Madame Tussaud's and taken part in evening events including learning circus skills, pizza and curry nights, pool and Wii competitions.

The Children in Care Council have contributed to developing the RBWM pledge to children and young people in care, which was published in early 2011. They are been involved in consultation work that will contribute to the development of the RBWM strategic plan for children and young people and have begun to take a lead in this working by naming Kickback, deciding on activities to take part in and becoming involved in the pan-Berkshire Children in Care Council.

During 2011, we launched the Kickback website and offer further training and activities to young people.

Celebrating achievement

children paintingEvery autumn, we take great pride in celebrating the achievements of the children and young people in our care. Since 2008, we have held an annual achievement evening, where we have recognised the work of many of our young people in developing independence skills, gaining academic qualifications and taking an active part in their local communities. From learning to smile and walk for the youngest children, developing the ability to swim or ride a bike, through to gaining their first job or entering university, we are justifiably proud of the talents of all our young people.
