Residents urged - give yourselves a sporting chance

Royal Borough residents are being urged to get into the spirit of the London Olympics by signing up for some sporting action of their own right here in the borough.

The message is - there's still time to take part in the first of four innovative "Return to Sport in RBWM" weeks to be held at various venues across the borough from Saturday 2 April to Sunday 10 April.

Designed to encourage adults of all ages to take part in sport and join their local clubs, the week-long event is organised by the council's sports development team in partnership with local sports clubs and leisure providers.

During the week clubs will throw open their regular sessions for FREE to adults who want to try a sport for the first time, to return to sport they have played in the past - or just to enjoy the opportunity to make new friends through sport.

Funded by the Berkshire 2012 Legacy fund, the first of the four week-long events to be held in the run-up to the Olympics will feature sports ranging from cycling, sailing and roller skating to introductory sessions at Braywick's Adizone outdoor "gym" and a programme of disability sports.

Cllr Simon Dudley, Cabinet Member for Adult and Community Services, said: "With the milestone of 500 days to the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games marked earlier this week sporting activities are more than ever uppermost in people's minds.

"We are hoping more adults of all ages will want to participate in the spirit of the games in their own way - and we hope these Return to Sport weeks will provide the perfect opportunity to do just that.

"Exercise and sport play a huge part in people's general health and well-being - and there surely is no better time to get the sporting habit, meet new people and gain new sporting skills. So come on - let's proudly wave the Olympic flag in the borough and have some sporting fun at the same time!"
