Young people are being encouraged to come forward and get valuable work experience to build their confidence and acquire new skills thanks to a new partnership between the Royal Borough and Jobcentre Plus.
A wide range of work experience placements will be available under the Government's Get Britain Working measures to help young people get the skills and experience they need to get into work.
The Council opportunities are being co-ordinated through Grow Our Own, which links local people with training and job opportunities here in the Royal Borough.
People aged between 18 and 24 and claiming Jobseeker's Allowance may be eligible to take part and can find out more at www.direct.gov.uk
Cllr Simon Dudley, Cabinet Member for Adult and Community Services, urged jobseekers to contact their local Jobcentre Plus office to find out about the opportunities available.
He said: "We want to reach out to jobseekers and offer up to eight weeks of work experience which will give them a fantastic opportunity to sample doing a real job in a real working environment without losing their benefit entitlement. For those who aren't in education, training or employment this has the potential to be a worthwhile first step on the ladder towards a productive and fulfilling future.
"For those who complete their placement successfully there will be a reference and a statement of achievement to help them in their search for a job or apprenticeship."
Cllr Dudley said that running the scheme through Grow Our Own was building strength in the employability of local people for local jobs.
Cllr Eileen Quick, Cabinet Member for Children's Services, encouraged young people to 'take the plunge'.
She added: "Getting experience in a real work setting and in a recognised scheme will be an impressive addition to any CV. Employers these days look for young people with a can-do attitude and a willingness to give things a go. The Council will be offering work experience in a wide range of services so there will be something to suit almost everyone, whatever their ultimate career or job ambitions - and even for those who haven't a clue what they want to do! Work experience with us could open new horizons and choices. You never know until you give it a try!"
Dominic Carey of Maidenhead Jobcentre Plus said: "Work experience is a great way for young jobseekers to get the skills and experience they need to get a job. This is just one way that Jobcentre Plus is working in partnership with local organisations to give tailored and specialist support to jobseekers."
Eighteen- to 24-year-olds interested in learning more about work experience with the council should contact their local Jobcentre Plus office.
