An Olympic Champion and Gold medal winner for Rowing, Gilchrist coxed the Leander Club Eights to win the Gold Medal in the 1908 London Olympics. The races themselves, however, were held at Henley.
Gilchrist was the son of the late Dr. Thomas and Isabella Maclagan. The memorial at Eton wrongly gives his year of birth as 1870. He was killed in action at Pilkem Wood in the second battle of Ypres and is remembered at the Ypres Menin Gate Memorial.
