Charles worked for Spottiswoode Ballantyne & Co Ltd, 17 Eton High Street as a booksellers apprentice. Spottiswoode Ballantyne were a large publishing and printing company who were based in London, Colchester and Eton. The company is still in existance but the Eton branch closed in 1946. The Buckinghamshire Remembers pages describe him as a librarian.
He is remembered at the Thiepval Memorial. He may have fallen in The Battle of Le Transloy, 1 18 October 1916.
