Education
We all need to be Learning for Sustainability, but perhaps the greatest responsibility for this lies with the Education sector and particularly with our schools.
The good news for schools is that the Department for Children, Schools and Families (DCSF) has developed a National Strategy for Sustainable Schools with an impressive bank of supporting resources. The next bit of good news is that the Council is committed to supporting the Sustainable Schools agenda through its Learning for Sustainability Action Group.
This section is slightly different from the others in that the themes follow the National Strategy Doorways with the addition of access points for the RBWM LfS Standard for Schools, Biodiversity and the Eco Schools Award.
Within the 'Training and Resources' section you will find details of local and national support including details of a number of external websites providing support for all aspects of the Sustainable Schools agenda.
The Council is committed to developing a culture of learning for sustainability as set out in its Learning for Sustainability Strategy. The Strategy encourages organisations to address sustainability as a strategic issue for the whole organisation. It is recommended that this is done through a cyclical process of understanding, planning, acting, observation and reflection.
The DCSF Sustainable Schools Agenda supports this approach. The main tool produced by the DCSF to help schools get to grips with this is the Sustainable School Self-evaluation (S3). The Council has now made the S3 its Learning for Sustainability Standard for Borough Schools.
