Hackney carriage fares

The Proprietor or driver of a Hackney Carriage will display a statement of the fares (Tariff) fixed by the council to be clearly displayed in their vehicle.

None of the stated fares will apply if the hirer at the commencement of the hiring expresses their desire to engage by time.

Where a hackney carriage furnished with a taximeter is hired by distance, the driver is not entitled to demand and take a fare greater than that recorded on the face of the taximeter, except for extra charges authorised by the fares below which may not be recorded on the face of the taximeter.

The driver must use the meter for all journeys within the Royal Borough of Windsor & Maidenhead. If the journey ends outside the Borough the meter must be used unless a set fare is agreed at the start of your journey.

Any complaints or other communications should be sent to:

No extra charges will be incurred for payment by debit or credit card.

Hackney carriage fare increase consultation

THE ROYAL BOROUGH OF WINDSOR AND MAIDENHEAD HACKNEY CARRIAGE FARES INCREASE SECTION 65 LOCAL GOVERNMENT (MISCELLANEOUS PROVISIONS)  ACT 1976

On Monday 9 February 2026 the Royal Borough’s Licensing Panel agreed to hold a public consultation on the proposal whereby certain RBWM licenced hackney carriages can implement a minimum fare which is 50% higher than the standard minimum fare.

This will only apply when the licenced hackney carriage is a people carrier, and is carrying five or more passengers at the start of the journey.

This will be in addition to the 50% surcharge above the standard fare for the entire journey that a people carrier carrying five or more passengers at the start of the journey can already implement.

The 50% higher minimum fare will not apply for any other type of vehicle or under any other circumstances.

Objections

If you wish to object to this proposal, please send your objection, by Friday 3 April 2026, either by letter by to:

The Royal Borough of Windsor & Maidenhead Licensing Team,
Town Hall, Maidenhead, SL6 1RF,

or by e-mail to licensing@rbwm.gov.uk.

Any objections received will be taken into account when the Licensing Panel next meets to discuss this proposal.
