A proposed way forward for reform of the Local Government Pension Scheme has been agreed. As a result the local government trade unions and the LGA, with the Department for Communities and Local Government, will commence detailed negotiations in the New Year.

New Local Government Pension Scheme 2014 - Communications Update
Following the acceptance by government of a principles document submitted by the Local Government Association, UNISON and GMB on how to take forward the reform of the Local Government Pension Scheme (LGPS) in England and Wales, a project has been set up to reach agreement on the elements of the new scheme together with the management and governance of the scheme going forward.

Chief Secretary wrote to Brendan Barber (TUC) and said :- "DCLG (Department for Communities and Local Government) will invite the Local Government Group (LGG) to conduct discussions with the Local Government trades unions with the aim of establishing a package of measures to secure the required short term savings, equivalent to the 3.2 percentage point contributions increase in other schemes. The package will include protection from contribution increases for the lowest paid. Other issues important to the long term sustainability of the Scheme shall also be discussed. DCLG will then begin the statutory consultation exercise to implement the necessary Scheme amendments so that they can come into force on 1 April 2012."

In a Written Statement to Parliament, the Chief Secretary said "For Local Government, we recognise that the funded nature of the scheme puts it in a different position and the difference will need to be reflected in the discussions".

Secretary of State invited Sir Merrick Cockell to commence discussions with the local authority trades unions to establish a package of measures to secure the short term savings by 2014/15, equivalent to the 3.2 percentage point contribution increases in other schemes.
